Modern Day Copywriting

5th Feb 2011 byLee Gilbert 0

Today’s buyer has become savvier. They expect more and will not be convinced by the old sales gimmicks. This means that sales copy needs to change to reflect these needs. In order to get ahead of your competition and sell more you need to keep your buyer’s needs in mind.

Here are some tips to help you with modern day copywriting:

  • Unique: in order to sell more you will need to get away from the common sales pages. The old format of; storyline, benefits, guarantee and call to action with some PS’s still works, but will bring in average sales. In order to get ahead of your competition you will need to be unique and make your sales page different from other people. This means that when your visitor comes to your page they will stop in their tracks and be curious to see what you are offering, because your sales page is not the usual hum drum sales pitch.
  • Video: some marketers use a short video to sell their product. This can be effective because potential customers can absorb the sales pitch quickly without having to wade through a sales letter. Seeing is believing and a video can be more effective than a written page. It can also be more entertaining.
  • Concise: it is important to note that modern day buyers are in a hurry and do not have time to read lengthy sales pages. For this reason you should try to write a concise and compelling sales page that will immediately get your reader’s attention and compel them to read on. If you make it short the reader will be more likely to read it through and take you up on your offer.
  • Headline: this is still the key to the success of your sales page. The headline is what the reader will see first and determine whether they will read on and buy your product. It should contain your product’s best benefit. Your second benefit should be incorporated into your subheading to really draw your reader into the body of your sales page.
  • Trigger words: these are also still effective in copywriting and can help to make your sales age more effective. There are as many as 200+ of these words and it is worthwhile to do some split testing of your sales pages to determine which ones are most effective for your particular readers. You should also be careful of negative words that will turn your readers away from a sale. These words conjure up bad feelings with your readers and will make them feel less upbeat. The more upbeat your potential customers are the more they will be inclined to purchase.
  • Personal: sales pages need to be friendly but not overly so. People like personal touch but do not take kindly to too much of it. Try to write as you would to a friend or a relative. Always be sure that you empathize with your reader and let them know that you have been there and you can offer the solution for their problems, (your product or service.)
  • Benefits: these are still an important part of a sales page but you can also add a little demo video to put emphasis on certain main benefits of your product and service. This will be a good selling touch and make your page a little different, which will also help you to sell more.
  • SEO: today a sales page does not only have to sell, it should also be optimized. This means that the main keywords and phrases should be sprinkled throughout the sales page. You should try not to overdo this and be sure that the keyword density is only 3% or 4% to satisfy the search engine bots. When you do this it will help your page to be indexed well in the search engines and you will gather more potential customers. This will result in more sales and profits for you.
  • Call to action: As with any sales letter always have a strong call to action. This is important or your whole page will go to waste.
  • No Hype: it is important to remember that hype is no longer acceptable to the modern day consumer. It is also illegal according to recent selling laws. Hype will also bring down your credibility and sales conversions.

It is important to understand your potential customer’s needs before you start to write your sales page. When you understand the consumer and what they are looking for you will be able to write a unique and up to date sales page that can result in more sales and profits for your business.
