Google prefers around 3% the other major engines do not mind if it is a little higher. The main keyword will be used every 35 words to get a 3% ratio. The important thing is not to overuse the keyword or phrase, this is known as keyword stuffing and will lead to penalization by the search engines. Your articles should flow well and be friendly to both human readers and search engine spiders.
  • Put keyword and description Meta tags in your website HTML: a quick way to see how to do this is to check out and compare your competitors on the first 10 listings in Google. By checking the source of the website you will see what Meta tags they are using and how they have done them. Do not copy; use as a guide.

The three major engines are Google Bing and Yahoo. Yahoo costs money to submit your site but will automatically index you when you create back links and get indexed in other engines. Google and Bing are free to submit to. It is wise to do this manually rather than using software.
 
Tips: The way to get faster results from Google is to create a blog at blogger.com. This is Google’s own blogging site. Googlebots will crawl this site on a regular basis and follow your links within your blog. When you link to a new web page it will be indexed within 48 hours on the Google search engine.
